The Black Norwegian Elkhound, is a more modern variant of the Norwegian Elkhound and has a stern disposition and requires an experienced owner.

The Black Elkhound breed is used for the same purposes as the grey Elkhound but it is much smaller and younger as a breed with origins in the 1800’s but with the same strong characteristics and a more wilful nature.

The Appearance, anatomy and physical attributes
The Black Elkhound is a typical Spitz, with dense short body, a square body type and building and good strong stance, full of power and pride, with dark safe eyes, and erect pointed ears.

The tail is carried tightly rolled over the back near the waistline with a dense and rich, but not bristling coat. It is very robust, hardy and enduring, and can withstand the rain as well as the cold very well. The breed has an ideal height of 47 cm, for males and 44 cm for females.

The Elghunder is used for virtually all forms of big game hunting, but is primarily bred for the hunting moose and bear. It is also a very good track-and guard dog, and has for many centuries has been one of the foremost and important farm dogs.

Black Elkhound can be more engaging and it likes to have a strong leader, however it needs to have constant exercise and training in order to thrive, it is easier to handle but it is first and foremost a good hunting dog and tour buddy.
