The California Spangled Cat is a breed that was bred to look like spotted wild cats such as the ocelot or leopard.  The breeding started in the 1980s.  It was and is a rare breed (possibly even extinct) and had a price of between $800 and $2,500.  The popularity of two other dotted cat breeds (Ocicat and Bengal) overshadows their development.

The anthropologist Louis Leakey experienced the death of a leopard by poachers. Thus, he suggested to the Californian Paul Casey Jr. of Arnold to breed a domestic cat that looks like a small leopard.  This would highlight the need to protect the leopard.  Casey died on 23rd April 2007 in Los Angeles, California. He was 60 years old.  The California Spangled is a cross of many races, such as the Abyssinian, American Shorthair and British Shorthair.  Despite their fierce appearance, it is purely a domestic cat.

At first sight, the cat is like a small leopard.  They have a long, slender but muscular body with polka dots.  The spots should be round, but can also be square, triangular, oval or rectangular.  The colors of the California Spangled are: black; blue; gold; silver; bronze or white.  They have striking cheekbones and large whisker pads.  Although the California Spangled look fierce, they’re domestic cats and love to play with people.
History

Paul Arnold Casey Jr, a screenwriter and playwright, founded the discipline after his return from Tanzania, where he had worked with Louis Leakey in the 1970s.  In the novella “Open the Coffin” he recorded his journey in Africa and the subsequent breeding of the California Spangled.

The cat is perfectly bred to resemble a leopard.  It gives the impression of a “house leopard.”  One of the many reasons for breeding this race was that people would not want to wear the coat, which has a pet.  The California Spangled was first introduced in 1986 in the Christmas catalog from Neiman Marcus, an American chain of luxury department stores, and not at a cat show as is the case in other races and still is.
Character

California Spangleds are affectionate, social, curious, and devote themselves entirely to their owners.  They respond strongly to eye contact and love to be active.  They like to sit on the shoulder or at eye level, so that they can see exactly what is going on around them. The cats are known for their intelligence, their athletic abilities, their great energy and acrobatic skills. California Spangleds love to pounce on everything and have a strong hunting instinct.  They love playing games with their owners.
