The Colorpoint Shorthair is a breed of cat from Thailand. The medium sized cat is characterized by colorpoints on her coat and her blue eyes.  The Colorpoint Shorthair is recognized only by the FSC.  It combines the old-style Siamese and Siamese color different from the traditional four allowed.

The origins of the Colorpoint Shorthair is the same as those of the Siamese as these are the same race.  The breed descended from the sacred temple cats of Siam. We think they were carefully protected and nurtured by the kings of Siam and manuscripts have been found mentioning the cats dating from 1350.
In 1884, the Siamese left for their first Asian cradle and were quickly appreciated worldwide.  By 1950, the Siamese’s physical changes was due to farmers.  Although the cats already had a slender figure, they became even finer, with larger ears and paws and their heads were refined which may seem relatively high on the body.

Some farmers have however, kept the subjects “traditional”, keeping closer to the physical Siamese origin. The Siamese were hardly recognized by associations worldwide.  A race named Thai is also controversial.

For some, it is the traditional Siamese while others think the breed is artificial and used only in order to find the physical “old style”.  The FSC created the standard for Colorpoint Shorthair order to consolidate the traditional Siamese and those whose color was not part of the four colors traditionally accorded to the United States (seal, chocolate, blue and lilac).

Standards
The silhouette of the Colorpoint Shorthair is long and slender, with long legs and thin, however still proportionate to the body.  The hind legs are slightly higher than the front and the feet are oval. The tail is long and thin. The head is medium sized, triangular and well proportioned with the rest of the body.

The muzzle is fine and the nose is long and straight. The eyes are always blue, spaced a maximum width of an eye apart. They are almond shaped. The ears are wide at the base, pointed and in harmony with the features of the head. They are smaller than the current Siamese. The fur is short, fine and brilliant. It must be clearly lying on the body. The only coat acceptedis colorpoint.

The recognized colors are red and cream, tabby blue, blue-cream, chocolate, cream, lilac, lilac-cream, red, seal, seal, turquoise and turtle. The four traditional colors are also recognized but are rarer.  Crosses with Siamese are allowed until 2019.

Character

Like many oriental cats, the Colorpoint Shorthair is very attached to its owner, often called a “cat-dog”.   They are talkative, outgoing, lively and require attention.  It is a cat who would not love solitude. These traits are still very individual and are functions of the history of each cat.
