The American bulldog is quite a famous breed and though it is big in size, its relation with the Old English Bulldog is well recognized and visible. These dogs are considered to be of two types, the Johnson type and the Scott type. The names of these different categories were given to them in respect of the people who had played an important role in the development of this breed of dogs. John D. Johnson and Allen Scott were the two people who were responsible for the development of these dogs. These dogs are quite well known as Bully or Classic type and Performance or Standard type. These dogs are well known for the shape, size and appearance and the dignity with which they carry them selves. People who have huge lawns or gardens attached to their houses prefer to have these breed of dogs as pets.

The appearance of the American bulldog demands attention and its something which a person cannot forget easily. Though this dog is a well built and strong looking, we get confused about his behavior when he starts playing with you. It seems that there is a small child within this huge and strong looking dog. The coat of American bulldogs is short and is mostly white in color or has patches of white along with other colors such as fawn, white and black brindle or there may be a combination of all such colors. There are chances that they might have a blue patch, however, this blue patch is quite rare. One can easily differentiate between the Johnson type and the Scott type, their muzzles are shorter than the Scott type. Another feature that is clearly visible is that the Johnson type is also bigger in appearance than the Scott type American Bulldog. There are various American bulldogs which are a combination of the two types, the weight of the bull dog can range anywhere between 27 kg to 57 kg.

As compared to the Bull dog and French bulldog, the American bulldog is much bigger and the breeders had no plans to make it a lap dog. The American dog is at his best behavior when it is around his family members, his behavior slightly changes when there are other acquaintances in the house. When the family is around, the dog is very happy and friendly. When they around kids, they are very patient and do quite well when the children are playing with them, but at times, the dog forgets that he is much more powerful than the kids. These dogs are full of energy and are fall within the working group of dog breeds. The behavior is very unpredictable when they are around cats and other smaller pets; their behavior reflects the prey drive, which is a breed trait.
