Sometimes it is seen with some owner that once a pet animal he owns becomes old they stop taking care of their pets and often treat them with cruelty, this is not right. As humans require special care during the old age so does our pets.
For all those cat owners out there, there bad news. It is not easy to make out when a cat is actually entering the old age because from the outside she always seems the same old kitten that you bought home. But from inside she may be suffering which you may not realise.
Older cats need extra and special care because often cats belonging to a certain age group suffers from sicknesses and needs which are unique and only seen in these cats. They need special care regarding every aspect of their life at this time. They should be taken care of at home and also they should be taken to the veterinarian at regular interval for a regular check up so that the owner is at all times aware of the problems his or her pet cat is facing.
Special nutrition routine should be started when considering an older cat. The weight of the older cat should be monitored regularly by visiting the local vet, because gain or loss in weight of the cat is recognised as the early signs of the health problems that a cat might be facing. Weight management of an older cat is of utmost importance because all the medicines and drugs that are administered to older cats are always done taking into the account of the weight of the cat.
Food habits of an older cat should be of primary concern to the owner. The older cats are not well adapted to the changes that may be made by her vet therefore any change in food items should be made slowly and the new food item should be administered in small quantities initially for easy digestion of the cat.
When you buy a kitten or own one make sure that you maintain a detailed record of the medical history of the cat or kitten that belongs to you because during the old age it is immense help as whatever the problems the cat faces during the old age the medication or diagnosis will be based on the prior medical history of the concerned kitten. Also there should be regular physical assessment of older cats because any disease will be indicative at this stage. Regular oral and dental care should be made available to your older pet. The older cat must also undergo eye check up frequently as there can be probable deterioration in the eye a general impact of any kind of disease that the older act might be undergoing.
The owner should make sure that the cat or her vet should have control over the parasites both inside as well as outside the body of the older cat that is the endoparasites like any of the common intestinal parasites and the ectoparasites like fleas, ticks, lice or mites etc.
