There are several varieties of worms capable of infecting your pet. First, it is important to determine what worm type Fido is infected with. Detection early on is key, and learning to recognise the symptoms of it is important. These may include appetite loss, diarrhoea, weight loss, and coughing to name just a few. If you have any uncertainties pay a visit to your vet.
This is not always necessary as worms are sometimes able to be treated using over the counter medicines. Oral medication known as a de-wormer can treat roundworms and hookworms. Once treated it is important to follow up with a vet to ensure treatment has worked.
Prescription medicines will be required for tapeworms. The de-wormers, Epsiprantel and Praziquantel are administrated through injection or orally at the vets. For whipworms it is best to seek prescription medicine from your vet, although over the counter medicine can have some effect. The course of medicine lasts five days and is administered on every third week. A heartworm medication after the infection has clear will prevent future infections.
These heartworms are the most prevalent in dogs and it is essential to use preventative medication once your dog reaches six months. If you are concerned that your dog is acting unusually, visit the vet immediately.
